Much like the recent storm swept through the north-west the previous evening, City overwhelmed Manchester United away at the their home ground. It was a convincing three-nil victory for Andrée Jeglertz’s side due to goals from Knaak, Shaw and Hemp. It was a performance that truly announced their title credentials as they strengthened their position at the league summit.

Consecutive Defeats for Manchester United

This scoreline signalled successive league setbacks for Skinner's side for the maiden instance since May 2024, putting them a significant margin off the top team with their trophy ambitions in serious doubt.

The Red Devils' capability to balance domestic and European football with a thin squad has been a hotly discussed subject since they secured entry to the UCL. Reviewing the fixture list, it always appeared this was the matchday that would truly test this capability. Unfortunately for the opposition, they looked fatigued throughout, the memorable win against Paris Saint-Germain clearly having had an impact.

Lineup Adjustments

Marc Skinner had tried to rotate the squad with a several adjustments. Toone, Elisabeth Terland, Janssen and Leah Galton all added vigor, although the exclusion of the high-performing Malard to the substitutes caused surprise.

The hosts, in comparison, have fewer loading issues. Jeglertz made a single alteration from last week’s win over the Toffees with Hemp making her first start since healing from injury.

Overpowering Start

The trouble started to gather for Skinner and his side from the kickoff. This was a demonstration of the quality from City whose dynamic offense manipulated and tore United open with a sublime initial 45 minutes showing that saw them score three goals in just over twenty minutes.

This placed City completely dominant and had Manchester United all at sea. Prior to this match, United had let in just a handful in this WSL season but they fell apart in the presence of City’s offensive ingenuity.

Initial Opportunities

The warning signs came soon when Vivianne Miedema used her physicality to bundle Zigiotti off the ball, only to pull her shot wide. Lauren Hemp was at the center of everything in the beginning, exploiting the room left by Jayde Riviere down the visitors' right side. Her deliveries were creating danger and led to an opportunity for Yui Hasegawa that Sandberg scrambled off the line.

The Red Devils had a number of sorties ahead, their direct style giving them choices in the wide areas but they could not test Ayaka Yamashita. Manchester City, meanwhile, controlled possession, teasing their rivals and trying to pull them out of their defensive shape.

Goals Galore

They made their pressure count with almost thirty minutes played when Aoba Fujino won the home team a set-piece. A ball to the far post was directed across goal by Shaw for Knaak to head in. It was Manchester City's 7th headed goal of the season.

They added to their advantage with two more goals just before the half-time. When Jade Rose was permitted to advance through the midfield from the back, the play widened for City. The key Kerstin Casparij received possession on the right before delivering a precise low cross for Shaw to bundle home. Shortly later, they had a third goal after a quick change in possession saw Lauren Hemp allowed the opportunity to fire a shot home from range.

Second Half

The most obvious substitution came from the United manager at the half-time as Malard entered for Elisabeth Terland but by this time it was too late to change the course of the match. Ex- City player Jess Park came most likely to score, rattling the upright, but the away team were offensively poor and were unable to produce a one shot on goal.

The home side, meanwhile, could have increased their cushion when a excellent Vivianne Miedema long ball sent Shaw away only for her to fluff her lines but it mattered little to the hosts. After failing to defeat any opponent who finished above them the previous campaign, Jeglertz’s side now have wins against Arsenal and Manchester United to put them in a favorable situation after nine matches.
